During the recent NFL scouting combine, Tampa Bay Buccaneers general manager Jason Licht addressed the future of veteran wide receiver Mike Evans. Licht indicated that he does not plan to use the franchise tag on Evans, stating that the receiver has “earned the right to” explore free agency.
On the latest episode of the “Ira Kaufman Podcast,” Licht was asked whether Evans would need a “sales pitch” to remain with the team that drafted him in 2014. Licht responded, “I don”t think so. Mike knows, he and I have had a lot of conversations over the last year, and I think he — I don”t want to put words in his mouth — but I think he sees what we have, the talent that we have, especially on his side of the ball, what we were able to do over the last few years when healthy.”
A recent report highlighted that Evans is prioritizing the chance to win another Super Bowl as he evaluates his options. The Buccaneers experienced a disappointing 2025 season, finishing with a record of 7-9 after starting strong at 6-2, which resulted in them missing the playoffs. Meanwhile, playoff contenders like the San Francisco 49ers, New England Patriots, and Los Angeles Chargers are believed to have interest in the 32-year-old wideout.
In an analysis published by ESPN”s Aaron Schatz, there is speculation that the Buffalo Bills, led by former MVP Josh Allen, will pursue Evans once the new league year begins on March 11. Additionally, Karen Guregian of MassLive noted that the Bills “will be lurking” for a top-tier receiver this offseason.
Despite the potential interest from other teams, reports indicate that Evans values the camaraderie within the Buccaneers locker room and has a deep affection for the team”s receiving corps. Licht elaborated on this aspect during the podcast, stating, “I know he loves his teammates. I know he absolutely loves his teammates, all of them. I don”t know how much of a sales pitch I”d have to give. But I think he understands. I think we see eye-to-eye, and he knows what we”re capable of.”
It remains to be seen whether Evans” connections with his teammates will play a significant role in his decision to stay with the Buccaneers as he approaches a pivotal moment in his career.
