Chargers Should Consider Reuniting with Keenan Allen in Free Agency

The Los Angeles Chargers must act quickly to secure a deal with Keenan Allen in the upcoming NFL free agency. With last year”s struggles at the wide receiver position still fresh in mind, the team should prioritize bringing back Allen. After signing Mike Williams, which briefly added excitement, the unexpected retirement of Williams left a gap that Allen helped fill when he returned to the team.

Allen”s performance last season was impressive, as he recorded 81 receptions for 777 yards and four touchdowns, providing the much-needed veteran presence for a young roster. Although he will turn 34 in April, there is intrigue about how he could thrive in a system under Mike McDaniel, especially with the offensive coordination he brings. Despite McDaniel”s preference for two-tight-end formations that limit the number of wide receivers on the field, Allen”s established rapport with quarterback Justin Herbert could be invaluable.

Current wideouts on the roster include Ladd McConkey, who is the leading receiver, and Tre” Harris, a second-year player with unproven potential. Additionally, Quentin Johnston has been mentioned as a possible trade candidate. Given that the Chargers are unlikely to draft another receiver early after selecting two last year, the urgency to retain Allen grows.

In a recent conversation with reporters around the Super Bowl, Allen expressed his desire to continue playing through 2026, hinting at a willingness to return to the Chargers. While he has kept his options open as he heads into free agency, it is clear that a reunion in Los Angeles would be welcomed.

As the NFL draft approaches, re-signing Allen sooner rather than later would give the Chargers a clearer understanding of their roster and needs. Making this move now could set the tone for a successful offseason.
