The Los Angeles Chargers are actively working to strengthen their roster as the new league year progresses. After addressing several key areas, the team is still on the lookout for additional support, particularly in the edge rusher department.
Following the loss of edge rusher Odafe Oweh, who signed with the Washington Commanders, the Chargers have retained veteran Khalil Mack and added some younger talent. Currently, the team”s edge rushing group also includes Tuli Tuipulotu and second-year player Kyle Kennard, alongside seasoned veteran Bud Dupree. However, the depth remains a concern as the Chargers often utilize three-edge rusher packages during passing situations.
One potential solution the Chargers should explore is signing Anfernee Jennings, who was recently released by the New England Patriots. Jennings, a former Super Bowl starting edge rusher, has demonstrated his capability as a solid run defender and has flashed pass-rushing potential throughout his career. Notably, he made a significant impact in the Chargers” wildcard matchup against the Patriots, where he pressured quarterback Justin Herbert.
There are several reasons why Jennings could be a valuable addition for the Chargers. Firstly, his proficiency in run defense aligns well with the team”s needs, as they rely heavily on their edge rushers to perform in this area. Secondly, since Jennings was released, he would not affect the compensatory pick formula, making him a low-risk signing. Furthermore, his collegiate experience at Alabama, an institution known for its strong football program, adds to his profile.
Jennings is projected to command a one-year contract worth approximately $6.4 million, which could be a reasonable investment for the Chargers. In the previous season, he participated in 194 special teams snaps, while Tuipulotu logged 160 snaps for Los Angeles. Bringing in Jennings would not only add depth to the edge rusher position but also provide a reliable special teams player, alleviating some of the burden on Tuipulotu.
As the Chargers continue their preparations for the upcoming draft and the subsequent waves of free agency, signing a proven edge rusher like Jennings should be a priority. With a talented draft class on the horizon, adding a player with Jennings” experience could enhance the competition within the team and bolster their chances for success in the upcoming season.
