Chiefs Coach Andy Reid Confident in Justin Fields as Backup Quarterback

In a recent statement, Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid expressed strong confidence in quarterback Justin Fields, suggesting that he has the potential to “win games for us.” This belief is particularly significant as Fields may be called upon to step in should star quarterback Patrick Mahomes be unable to start the regular season or if he suffers any further injuries.

Reid emphasized, “If he doesn”t, you know, if he”s not able to make it for the beginning of the season, then we know we”ve got a legitimate backup there that can go win games for us.” This statement underscores the importance of having a reliable player ready to perform in critical situations.

Fields, who was the 11th overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft after playing at Ohio State, began his career with the Chicago Bears. He showcased impressive dual-threat skills during his time there. After three seasons, he was traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2024, where he initially secured a starting role before losing it to a returning Russell Wilson shortly into the season.

Last season, Fields joined the New York Jets as their starting quarterback but struggled to maintain that position and ultimately ended the season on injured reserve due to a knee injury.

Having signed a two-year, $40 million contract, Fields is set to enter free agency again after the 2026 season. Now at 27 years old and on his fourth team in as many seasons, he finds himself with another opportunity to revitalize his career.

In the previous season, Fields started nine games, completing 62.7 percent of his passes, accumulating 1,259 passing yards along with seven touchdowns and only one interception. Over his career, he has amassed 9,039 passing yards, with 52 touchdowns against 32 interceptions, and holds a completion percentage of 61.4.
