The Clemson Tigers kicked off their 2026-27 season with an exciting spring game on Saturday at Memorial Stadium. After trying an offense-against-defense format last year, the team opted for an Orange-White matchup this time. Here are the offensive players who particularly stood out during the game.
Gordon Sellars III, a 6-foot-3 true freshman wide receiver from Charlotte, made a significant impact by catching three passes for 34 yards, including a touchdown. With nine targets, he led all players in that category. His touchdown came from an impressive back-shoulder throw by quarterback Christopher Vizzina in the second quarter, successfully beating cornerback Myles Oliver“s press coverage. As the quarterbacks rotated, Sellars consistently posed a threat on the outside.
Tyler Brown also had a standout performance, catching five passes for 47 yards and scoring the other touchdown. His ability to gain yards after the catch was evident, especially during a notable 23-yard connection with quarterback Pearman in the third quarter. Brown”s dynamic play suggests he can elevate his game, even amidst competition from teammates like Bryant Wesco Jr. and T.J. Moore.
Running back Gideon Davidson expressed confidence in Clemson”s running back unit, stating, “We”ve got a lot of diversity, a lot of speed, a lot of power. We”re all good running backs, and we”re going to be utilized well.” Davidson led the team with 80 rushing yards on nine carries, including a notable 21-yard run early in the game. The running back competition appears heated, with Davidson, Chris Johnson Jr. (a transfer from SMU), and redshirt sophomore David Eziomume all vying for prominence.
On the special teams front, punter Jack Smith proved his worth as well. He executed two out of three punts that pinned the opposing team inside their own 10-yard line, including a powerful 54-yarder that landed at the six. This effective punting contributed to the Orange team”s defensive success, culminating in a safety when they sacked freshman quarterback Brock Bradley in the end zone.
As the Tigers gear up for summer football, the performances from Sellars, Brown, Davidson, and Smith indicate a promising outlook for the upcoming season.
