Colts Decide to Start Rookie Riley Leonard Over Philip Rivers in Season Finale

The Indianapolis Colts have made a critical decision regarding the future of veteran quarterback Philip Rivers, opting to start rookie Riley Leonard in their final regular-season game against the Houston Texans. This shift comes as the Colts find themselves out of playoff contention, making it unnecessary to risk the health of the 44-year-old quarterback.

According to ESPN”s Jeremy Fowler, the Colts are transitioning to Leonard for the upcoming Week 18 matchup. “The Colts are expected to start rookie Riley Leonard on Sunday against the Texans,” Fowler reported on X. “After three games with Philip Rivers and the Colts falling out of the playoffs, Indy will get a look at the rookie.”

Rivers” tenure this season was brief, as the Colts struggled to find success with him under center, finishing 0-3 during his time as the starting quarterback. However, the performance of the veteran player was commendable. He demonstrated that he still possessed the skills necessary to compete at a high level, effectively managing protections, calling plays at the line, and showcasing his arm strength.

Despite his efforts, Rivers expressed frustration over the inability to secure victories. He completed 63.0 percent of his passes for 544 yards, with four touchdowns and three interceptions. Unfortunately, the team”s defense and overall performance faltered when it mattered most, contributing to the disappointing results.

As the Colts look to the future, giving Leonard an opportunity to play in a meaningful game will allow the team to assess his potential as they prepare for the next season.
