An NFL quarterback declined an offer from the Indianapolis Colts prior to the announcement of Philip Rivers returning to the team.
Rivers is back in a Colts uniform for the first time since retiring after the 2020 season, where he guided the team to an 11-6 record and a playoff berth. “Certainly, I wasn”t really hanging on to any hope of playing again. I kind of thought that ship had sailed. But something about it excited me. And it”s kind of one of those deals; the door opens and you can either walk through it and find out if you can do it or run from it,” Rivers stated this week after signing with the Colts practice squad, following a season-ending Achilles injury to starting quarterback Daniel Jones.
While Rivers has been the center of attention, the Colts reportedly explored other quarterback options as well. In a recent discussion with the Denver Post, Broncos quarterback Sam Ehlinger revealed that he received an offer from the Colts to rejoin the franchise where he spent the first four years of his career. “We”re really happy here and enjoy the organization, the path we”re on and what we”re building,” Ehlinger commented. “I want to be part of that. I was in Indianapolis for four years, and I love everybody over there. It”s just a difficult situation, obviously.”
Ehlinger had the opportunity to join the active roster of the Colts but ultimately opted to stay with the Broncos practice squad.
