The Indianapolis Colts are reportedly preparing for a strong pursuit of edge rusher Trey Hendrickson, who is set to become a free agent after his stint with the Cincinnati Bengals, according to a report from NFL Network.
Hendrickson has emerged as one of the premier edge rushers in the league despite facing a challenging 2025 season, plagued by injuries. His impressive track record includes a total of 35 sacks over the 2023 and 2024 seasons, making him the leader in that category across the NFL. Additionally, he has earned four Pro Bowl selections and one All-Pro nod during his career. Although it seems likely that Hendrickson will leave Cincinnati, there is still a chance the Bengals could employ the franchise tag and initiate a trade.
According to Cameron Wolfe from NFL Network, the Colts are anticipated to express interest in Hendrickson, whether through free agency or a trade agreement. Wolfe stated, “Keep an eye on the Indianapolis Colts. It”s a team that wants to be aggressive… Lou Anarumo has a lot of familiarity with Trey Hendrickson. They just hired a D-line coach named Marion Hobby, who coached Trey Hendrickson for four years in Cincinnati.” He further noted, ” are going to be aggressive in trying to get if he does reach the market, or even if it”s a sign and trade.”
The Colts” motivation to pursue Hendrickson is underscored by their recent performance, as they recorded only 39 sacks last season and are in dire need of enhancing their pass-rush capabilities. Furthermore, the job security of head coach Jonathan Gannon and general manager Chris Ballard could be at stake as they head into the 2026 season. This urgency may drive them to make significant moves to secure a playoff spot, with signing or trading for Hendrickson fitting that profile.
As for Hendrickson”s market value, estimates suggest he could command a two-year deal worth approximately $50.8 million in free agency. The Colts are in a favorable financial position, projected to have about $35.5 million in cap space as they enter the offseason.
With the offseason approaching, the Colts” ambition to strengthen their defense could make them a key player in Hendrickson”s free agency saga.
