Dallas Cowboys Considering Future Without Jadeveon Clowney

The Dallas Cowboys are evaluating their roster options at the NFL Combine, and discussions have emerged regarding edge rusher Jadeveon Clowney, who may not align with the team”s future plans.

As the NFL Combine takes place in Indianapolis, the Cowboys have prioritized formal interviews with linebackers, recognizing it as a critical area in need of improvement. Although the organization initially expressed interest in re-signing Clowney, recent developments suggest that his fit within the new defensive scheme may be in question.

Clowney, who joined the Cowboys mid-season last year for $3.5 million, quickly became the team”s leading edge rusher, recording 8.5 sacks over 13 games. In December, Cowboys executive Stephen Jones confirmed that the team wanted Clowney back, stating they would engage in talks with his representatives. However, after the hiring of new defensive coordinator Christian Parker and a shift to a 3-4 defensive alignment, which could require Clowney to transition to a linebacker role, the situation has become more complicated.

Jon Machota of The Athletic reported that Jones indicated there have been no ongoing discussions with Clowney, reflecting uncertainty about his return. Jones mentioned, “We”re gonna work through with new DC Christian Parker. A lot of it will happen this coming week, in terms of the type of player we”re looking for.” This statement hints at a lack of optimism regarding Clowney”s future with the team.

Additionally, the Cowboys have not yet finalized any trade discussions regarding Maxx Crosby of the Las Vegas Raiders, another player linked to Dallas in recent rumors. Crosby expressed dissatisfaction with his situation in Las Vegas, but Raiders general manager John Spytek confirmed his intention to keep Crosby on the roster.

In the draft, the Cowboys are expected to focus on addressing their secondary issues, which have plagued the team. According to Pro Football Focus, a potential target could be Kamren Curl, a safety from the Los Angeles Rams. Curl”s experience with coverage disguises under Rams defensive coordinator Chris Shula could make him a valuable asset in Parker”s new system.

As the Cowboys continue their preparations at the Combine, they have already interviewed several linebackers, including prospects from notable programs like Ohio State and Texas A&M. With an eye on rebuilding the defense, the organization”s upcoming decisions will be crucial as they seek to enhance their overall performance.
