Drake Maye Aware of Broncos Edge Rushers Ahead of AFC Championship

The New England Patriots are on the cusp of returning to the Super Bowl for the first time since 2018, needing just one more victory after overcoming the formidable Houston Texans in the divisional round with a score of 28-16. However, quarterback Drake Maye faced challenges during the game, suffering five sacks and fumbling twice, which raises concerns as the team prepares to face the Denver Broncos in the upcoming AFC Championship.

Maye acknowledged the need to be “cognizant” of the Broncos” edge rushers, who were the leaders in sacks during the regular season with a total of 68. In a recent press conference, he commented, “I don”t think you try to change it… Little things like that are just knowing the time and place for it.” He emphasized the importance of getting the ball out quickly and said, “Taking care of the football is the No. 1 thing. If we have time and have a look downfield, you know me, I”m gonna take a shot.”

Despite the sack issue, Maye has been effective in leading the Patriots” offense during the playoffs in just his second season. He has thrown for 447 yards on 33 completions out of 56 attempts, achieving four touchdowns against two interceptions. As a candidate for the MVP Award, with 4,394 yards and 31 touchdowns in the regular season, he does not need to be in peak form against the Broncos, but he must perform adequately.

The Patriots” defense, guided by head coach Mike Vrabel, has been exceptional this postseason, allowing only 224 yards per game. The Broncos will start backup quarterback Jarrett Stidham due to an injury to their regular starter Bo Nix. This situation could work to the Patriots” advantage, considering Stidham”s limited experience in the league.

If Maye can alleviate the pressure on himself and focus on executing the game plan while allowing Vrabel to strategize against the Broncos” offense, the Patriots stand a strong chance of securing a spot in the Super Bowl.
