The Florida Gators are set to retain quarterback DJ Lagway as their starter for the upcoming matchup against No. 6 Ole Miss. This decision comes despite Lagway”s recent performance issues, as he has struggled to find his rhythm on the field.
Interim head coach Billy Gonzales confirmed that Lagway will take the first-team reps in practice leading up to Saturday”s game. Gonzales also acknowledged the importance of competition in the quarterback position, suggesting that it benefits the entire team. In his last outing, Lagway completed 11 of 19 passes for 83 yards, accompanied by a touchdown and three interceptions. Freshman Tramell Jones, who could potentially challenge Lagway for the starting spot, had a less productive performance, going 9-of-17 for 60 yards.
“If a pitcher”s struggling in the major leagues, what do you do? You get the next guy in, right?” Gonzales remarked. “It doesn”t mean that he”s not a great pitcher. Just means that wasn”t his day. For some reason or another, it wasn”t breaking. For some reason or another, he didn”t have the day that he wanted to have.”
Despite the setbacks, Gonzales believes in Lagway”s potential and has emphasized the need for the young quarterback to regroup and learn from his experiences. This season, Lagway has accumulated 1,762 passing yards, 11 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions, with most of his struggles occurring since a strong opening game against lower-division Long Island.
Lagway”s challenges have been heightened due to missing significant time in the offseason due to core-muscle surgery and other injuries. After showing promise with a 6-1 record as a freshman starter in 2024, he now faces scrutiny regarding his position in a program actively searching for a new head coach. The 20-year-old has also been hesitant to commit to the Gators for the following season, despite having lucrative sponsorship deals with notable brands such as Gatorade, Jordan Brand, and Mercedes-Benz of Gainesville.
Teammate and running back Jadan Baugh expressed support for Lagway, stating, “Lags is a good player, honestly. We”ve seen a lot of flashes from Lags. He”s just got to keep his head into it, honestly. It”s been a rough season, having to deal with a lot of things as being a top quarterback. That”s a lot of pressure.”
Gonzales has been working with Lagway this week to help alleviate some of the pressure he may be feeling, encouraging him to play with freedom and confidence. “What makes you unique? I don”t want you to lose that piece,” Gonzales advised. “You”ve extended so many plays since you”ve been here, and that”s what makes you great. So don”t lose that edge.” He also emphasized the need for Lagway to make smarter decisions on the field, particularly when it comes to checking down.
As the Gators prepare for their SEC showdown against Ole Miss, all eyes will be on Lagway to see if he can regain his form and lead the team effectively.
