Houston Texans Targeting Top Free-Agent Running Backs This Offseason

The Houston Texans are reportedly planning to pursue several premier free-agent running backs during the upcoming offseason, a move that could significantly impact the New York Jets, Seattle Seahawks, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Carolina Panthers.

Concerns regarding Joe Mixon“s future with the Texans are mounting, especially after he missed all of last season due to a foot injury. There are indications that he may be released, making the team in need of a new starting running back for the 2026 season. If Mixon is let go, the Texans would be left with inexperienced players like Woody Marks and Jawhar Jordan, emphasizing the necessity of signing a seasoned veteran.

According to Aaron Wilson of Click2Houston.com, the Texans are likely to sever ties with Mixon due to a failed physical, which would relieve them of his three-year, $27 million contract and save them $8.5 million in the process. Wilson also stated that the Texans are expected to actively seek top-tier running backs in free agency, which includes names like Breece Hall, Travis Etienne, Kenneth Walker, and Rico Dowdle.

While Hall”s future remains uncertain as the Jets are expected to franchise tag him, some insiders believe they might opt for a transition tag, allowing Hall to negotiate with other teams while giving the Jets a chance to match any offers. Should Hall receive a transition tag, it is anticipated that the Texans would make a competitive offer, which could jeopardize the Jets” chances of retaining the talented rusher.

As for Walker, he is likely to remain with the Seahawks, given their significant cap space and willingness to meet his demands. However, the Seahawks are not likely to provide an unlimited offer and will set a financial ceiling. This opens the door for Houston to potentially extend a lucrative offer that could sway Walker away from Seattle.

Etienne and Dowdle appear to be more accessible options for the Texans. The Jaguars are currently facing salary cap constraints, making it challenging for them to commit substantial funds to a running back. Meanwhile, Dowdle”s role with the Panthers has diminished, leading to dissatisfaction that could push him toward a new team. Carolina already has Chuba Hubbard on the roster and younger backs like Jonathon Brooks and Trevor Etienne, making a split with Dowdle plausible.

Although neither Etienne nor Dowdle may possess the same level of excitement as Walker or Hall, both would fulfill the Texans” requirements at running back. Personally, Etienne is preferred due to his proven production and well-rounded skill set, making him a valuable target for Houston.

In related news, rumors are circulating about potential trades involving the Jets and either the Eagles or Texans, as well as the Vikings engaging with the Giants, Steelers, or Raiders. Additionally, updates about Maxx Crosby from the Raiders have raised eyebrows among potential suitors, while news of Malik Nabers” injury during the Giants” combine has provided a target return date.
