J.J. McCarthy Leads Vikings Against Struggling Giants in Young QB Showdown

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — After a stellar three-touchdown performance that propelled the Minnesota Vikings to victory, quarterback J.J. McCarthy is already setting his sights on the next challenge: a matchup against the New York Giants. Despite the Vikings being eliminated from playoff contention, McCarthy emphasized the importance of focusing on the future. “We”re always focused on that next thing and how to convert it,” he stated. “We”re only as successful as our last successful act.”

The Giants are in dire straits, having lost their last eight games and sitting at 2-12. This Week 16 contest offers both teams a valuable opportunity to further develop their young quarterbacks, with McCarthy making just his ninth start in the NFL and Jaxson Dart taking the field for his tenth. Dart remarked on the challenges of transitioning to the professional level, saying, “I”m still getting the hang of this game. It”s just a complete step up from the college level. There are a lot of adjustments that need to be made.”

McCarthy, a top-10 pick in the 2024 draft, missed his entire rookie season due to a knee injury. He has faced additional setbacks this year, including a right ankle sprain and a concussion. Meanwhile, Dart, who was drafted in the first round this year, has also dealt with concussion protocols and has been pulled for evaluations multiple times. The Giants are keen on keeping Dart healthy, and interim coach Mike Kafka noted improvements, stating, “He slid a few times. It”s not like he”s taking guys head-on anymore. He”s picking an edge and at least trying to protect himself.”

While the Giants aim to gain experience for Dart, the Vikings (6-8) seek to build momentum for the future. After winning their last two games, McCarthy”s performance is crucial for the team”s outlook. Coach Kevin O”Connell remarked, “Playing December football is always important, regardless of what your record is. You can learn a lot about yourself and the guys you work with by how we handle ourselves in these moments.”

One significant area of concern has been the development of chemistry between McCarthy and two-time All-Pro Justin Jefferson, who has only registered six catches over the past three games despite often finding himself open. McCarthy struggled with accuracy in the previous game against Dallas, missing a deep throw that could have resulted in a touchdown. Jefferson, however, maintains a patient outlook, believing they are close to establishing a rhythm similar to what he had with former quarterbacks Sam Darnold and Kirk Cousins.

On the other side, the Giants are dealing with their fourth kicker of the season, Ben Sauls, after releasing Younghoe Koo due to missed field goals. Sauls, an undrafted rookie from Pittsburgh, is set to make his professional debut this week. “I feel fantastic,” he expressed, eager to seize the chance. The challenging winds at MetLife Stadium present an additional hurdle for him, but he is prepared, having dealt with similar conditions during his time in college.

As for the Vikings, the presence of veteran center Ryan Kelly has been felt, particularly following his return from injury. Despite suffering a concussion earlier in the season and missing several games, Kelly played a key role in the team”s recent success. O”Connell highlighted his importance: “He”s playing physical. He”s in total command.” Keeping Kelly healthy is crucial as the Vikings look to solidify their offense moving forward.
