Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts is currently under scrutiny as speculation about his future with the team intensifies.
Hurts has faced significant criticism this season, particularly following a game against the Los Angeles Chargers where he committed five turnovers. This loss contributed to the Eagles” troubling three-game losing streak, largely attributed to their offensive struggles, with Hurts at the center of the backlash.
There are whispers suggesting that the Eagles might consider trading the Super Bowl champion during the upcoming offseason. However, Charles Robinson of Yahoo Sports argues that such a move is illogical. He predicts that the Eagles will likely opt to extend Hurts” contract instead of trading him, suggesting that General Manager Howie Roseman would prefer to avoid the uncertainties of seeking a new quarterback amidst current challenges.
Robinson stated, “With all of that in mind, I don”t see Roseman risking going back into a quarterback abyss just because there are problems right now with both Hurts and the Eagles” offense.” He believes it is more probable that Roseman will negotiate another extension with Hurts to alleviate salary cap issues rather than disrupt the team”s financial structure by trading him.
In April 2023, Hurts signed a lucrative five-year contract worth $255 million, which is set to run through 2028. His initial performance after signing was commendable, leading the Eagles to a championship last season. However, recent performances have raised significant concerns about his future in Philadelphia.
This season, Hurts has thrown for 2,754 yards with 19 touchdowns and six interceptions, maintaining a completion rate of 64.7 percent and a passer rating of 96.0. In addition, he has rushed for 337 yards and eight touchdowns. Despite these statistics, Hurts has struggled with accuracy this year, leading to frustration among key receivers, including A.J. Brown.
Currently, the Eagles hold first place in the NFC East and are set to face the Las Vegas Raiders this Sunday. This matchup presents a crucial opportunity for Philadelphia to turn their season around. However, if their struggles persist, the discourse surrounding Hurts” future with the team is likely to escalate.
