Javonte Williams Signs New Deal After Breakout Season with Cowboys

The Dallas Cowboys have secured some stability in their backfield by extending the contract of running back Javonte Williams after his impressive breakout season in 2025. Williams, who joined the Cowboys on a one-year deal, proved to be a significant asset, prompting the team to lock him in for the future.

Williams has signed a three-year contract worth $24 million, which includes a $6 million signing bonus and $16 million guaranteed, according to sources familiar with the deal. This contract positions him as one of the key offensive players for the Cowboys moving forward.

During the 2025 season, Williams emerged as a standout performer, leading the team in rushing with 1,201 yards and scoring 11 touchdowns. This marked a remarkable improvement over his rookie season in 2021 with the Denver Broncos, where he initially made waves in the league.

Fans might recall Williams” strong performance against the Cowboys during his rookie year. In a notable game in 2021, he rushed for 111 yards on 17 carries, contributing to the Broncos” 30-16 upset victory over Dallas. That game was pivotal for Williams as it marked his first 100-yard rushing game in the NFL.

Despite a challenging second season in 2022, where he suffered a serious knee injury that limited his play, Williams bounced back significantly in 2025. He had been building momentum after finishing his rookie season with 903 yards and four touchdowns.

Prior to his professional career, Williams had a successful college tenure at North Carolina, amassing 2,297 rushing yards and 29 touchdowns over three seasons, often sharing the backfield with Michael Carter. Their combined efforts set an NCAA record in a game against Miami in 2020.

Interestingly, Williams showcased his versatility in high school, playing both running back and linebacker at Wallace-Rose Hill High School. He was recognized for his defensive skills, earning MVP honors and helping his team secure multiple state championships.

Academically, Williams excelled, graduating as valedictorian with a remarkable GPA of 4.6. His intelligence on the field has been praised by teammates, including quarterback Dak Prescott, who noted, “He plays smart at running back, and he can make plays.”

As the Cowboys prepare for the 2026 offseason, retaining Williams is seen as a strategic move to ensure a consistent and powerful backfield alongside Prescott, setting the stage for future success.
