In a bid to secure a lucrative contract, former Ohio State wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba is setting his sights on becoming the highest paid wide receiver in the NFL. After achieving success with a Super Bowl victory and earning the league”s Offensive Player of the Year award, Smith-Njigba is confident that his financial reward is imminent.
Now in his third season with the Seattle Seahawks, Smith-Njigba has made quite an impact, contributing significantly to the team”s recent championship win. He expressed a relaxed attitude towards contract negotiations in a recent interview with WFAA, stating, “I”m really not too pressed right now to get it done. I know my time is coming, and when we get it done, it”s going to be a great deal. God”s timing is perfect timing, so whenever that may come, we”ll be ready for it.” He believes his performance and contributions to the game and community warrant a top-tier contract.
Transitioning into a primary receiving role, Smith-Njigba has evolved from a strong performer with 1,100 yards in his rookie season to a standout player leading the NFL with 1,793 receiving yards this past season, alongside 119 receptions and 10 touchdowns. His prowess in deep routes, as well as quick and intermediate passing plays, has solidified his position as a top performer.
With the departure of DK Metcalf to the Pittsburgh Steelers, Smith-Njigba stepped up as the Seahawks” leading receiver. His contributions were recognized when he was named the league”s top offensive non-quarterback, narrowly edging out the Rams” Puka Nacua for the accolade.
Should Smith-Njigba secure a contract that meets or exceeds current benchmarks, he would join the ranks of the league”s elite earners, surpassing the existing record of over $40 million per year held by Ja”Marr Chase of the Cincinnati Bengals. Justin Jefferson follows closely with a $35 million annual salary.
Currently, Smith-Njigba is still operating under his rookie contract, which allows the Seahawks to extend his deal for a fifth year at a lower rate. However, the team may opt for an early extension to ensure his satisfaction. The Seahawks are also focused on extending the contract of cornerback Devon Witherspoon, who was drafted alongside Smith-Njigba.
As he continues to establish himself as a premier talent in the league, Smith-Njigba has made a strong case for why he deserves a contract that reflects his value to the Ohio State program, the Seahawks, and the NFL as a whole.
