Jerry Jones, the owner and general manager of the Dallas Cowboys, expressed his excitement about Quinnen Williams following the defensive tackle”s impressive debut on Monday night. Williams played a crucial role in the Cowboys” 33-16 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders.
In his first game with the Cowboys, Williams made a significant impact, recording five quarterback hits, four tackles, 1.5 sacks, and a tackle for loss. Jones was particularly focused on Williams” performance, stating, “I was zeroed in on him early and I wanted to see how the Raider offensive line was handling him. It kind of caused you to sit back in your seat and smile a little bit. He was so dominant.”
Although Jones had not yet reviewed the game film, he believes that if Williams continues to generate such pressure, opposing teams will need to adjust their blocking schemes. This, in turn, could provide advantages for other players on the defense. “We just haven”t had pressure like that—pass pressure. When you can be sound against that run and then get some pressure, too, and it”s coming from a bad spot for the quarterback, up the middle. We haven”t had that,” he added.
Williams marked his first sack in a Dallas uniform during the second quarter of the game, a moment that was celebrated on the field while the broadcast showed a smiling Jones in a suite. However, he was not the only defensive player to catch Jones” eye. The owner also noted the strong performances of returning defenders like DeMarvion Overshown and Malik Hooker.
Jones emphasized the necessity of having a robust interior pass-rushing presence, saying, “I think that it”s harder. You can vary ways to get some space pressure. You can vary that and you can use guys that are not necessarily prototypes for size out there to get some pressure. But in the middle, it takes not only strength and size, in my mind, but it also takes that unique big guy that can really tie up two blockers and give a chance to touch that quarterback. Those are hard to find.”
