After observing the resurgence of Sam Darnold, Mac Jones is determined to craft his own comeback story. The former quarterback for the New England Patriots is revitalized following his first season learning from Kyle Shanahan with the San Francisco 49ers. This transformation mirrors the optimism Darnold expressed as he prepares to start for the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl 2026.
Jones stated, “I feel like I”ve watched him in interviews, and he does say that learning from Kyle and Brock really changed his career. I see why now. I”ve learned so much this year.” He acknowledged the similarities in their experiences, suggesting a shared path to success.
During the 2023 season, Darnold served as a backup to Brock Purdy in San Francisco before reviving his career with the Minnesota Vikings. His impressive 14-3 record led to a lucrative three-year deal valued at over $100 million with the Seahawks last offseason.
Selected 15th overall by the Patriots in 2021, Jones had a promising start, leading the team to the playoffs during his rookie season. However, the following year saw a decline as the Patriots struggled under a coaching duo of Joe Judge and Matt Patricia after the departure of Josh McDaniels. The return of former offensive coordinator Bill O”Brien in 2023 marked the end of Jones” time in New England.
In early 2024, Jones was traded to the Jaguars, where he backed up Trevor Lawrence. However, when Purdy faced injuries, Jones stepped in as a starter, achieving a 5-3 record over eight games, throwing 13 touchdowns against six interceptions. “Kyle has been great for me. We”re really on the same … I call it wi-fi. We”re just a really good match,” Jones commented on their synergy.
Expressing his renewed confidence, Jones remarked, “It”s definitely motivating for me. I feel I can do that. I have my swag back, and I feel like that”s important for me. I can go out there and win games for whoever.” He is also aware of the business aspect of the NFL, stating, “Honestly, it”s a business. You know how this goes. I”ve proven I can be a starter. I”ve proven I can be a starter in multiple different spots. I have 50-plus starts or whatever. I know how to do it, but it”s also a business. I understand both sides of it.”
