The 2026 offseason has commenced, and Aaron Rodgers finds himself back on the free agent market. This scenario is reminiscent of last year when he kept various teams in suspense for months before ultimately signing with the Pittsburgh Steelers in June. However, the current market may not afford teams the same patience as before.
In a proactive move, the Steelers have extended an invitation to the four-time MVP, potentially leading to a reunion with his former head coach, Mike McCarthy, from their time together in Green Bay. This collaboration could spark another Super Bowl run, assuming Rodgers can overcome the challenges of playing at 42 years old.
Before any of this can unfold, Rodgers must first decide on his return, followed by the Steelers approving a deal. NFL insider Tom Pelissero suggested that the likelihood of both events occurring is high, with an official announcement potentially coming on March 11, coinciding with the start of the new league year. “Unlike last year when Aaron delayed his decision until just before OTAs in June, I expect that, based on my information, he will need to make a decision sooner rather than later, likely around the start of the league year,” Pelissero stated during his appearance on The Rich Eisen Show.
Pelissero indicated that Rodgers and McCarthy have had numerous discussions in recent weeks, focusing on football and the prospect of a reunion in Pittsburgh. Ultimately, though, the decision rests solely with Rodgers. “This is Aaron Rodgers. He”s got to make his own decision. Only he knows what”s happening in his life and his mind. He”s going through his typical process, which likely involves taking some time away to reflect,” the analyst added.
There is speculation that this season could mark the end of Rodgers” tenure in Pittsburgh, especially following the resignation of head coach Mike Tomlin. However, Pelissero pointed out that if McCarthy is hired by the Steelers, it would significantly influence Rodgers” decision to return. “He”s certainly showing an interest… When Mike Tomlin stepped down, it seemed like that might be it, and Rodgers might be done at that point. But I mentioned on this show that if there was one coach Aaron Rodgers would play for again, despite their past issues, it”s Mike McCarthy. They maintain a close relationship.”
Pelissero also observed that Rodgers did not feel entirely at home last year, particularly under offensive coordinator Arthur Smith, with whom he had no prior experience. This dynamic is expected to shift this season with McCarthy”s return. “This is Mike McCarthy. This is Aaron going back to his roots. Everything is built on how he plays quarterback,” Pelissero elaborated.
The Steelers are expected to have clarity on Rodgers” intentions before the start of free agency. If there is no definitive answer by then, the team will need to explore other options. “Will Howard is certainly part of it. But I agree with you, Rich. As I mentioned on Super Bowl Sunday, the odds are increasing that Aaron Rodgers will return. I don”t see him going anywhere else. If he continues playing, it will likely be for the Pittsburgh Steelers,” Pelissero concluded.
In summary, unless past tensions between Rodgers and McCarthy resurface, a reunion appears highly probable, with March 11 being a pivotal date for both parties.
