Nebraska”s TJ Lateef Cleared to Play in Las Vegas Bowl Against Utah

LAS VEGAS — Nebraska”s football program has faced a significant challenge over the past month as they worked to ensure starting quarterback TJ Lateef would be fit for the upcoming Las Vegas Bowl against Utah. Lateef, who suffered a hamstring injury at the end of the regular season, has been the focal point of their preparations.

Head coach Matt Rhule provided an update after the Huskers” practice at Bishop Gorman High School, indicating that the coaching staff aimed to conduct two weeks of practice designed to ramp up Lateef”s readiness. The first week had limited repetitions, while the second week focused on full participation. With just days remaining before the New Year”s Eve showdown at Allegiant Stadium, the strategy appears to be successful.

Rhule stated that Lateef is now 100% cleared to compete, having participated fully in Saturday”s practice and taking all first-team snaps. “He had a reps cap on him yesterday, but took every rep today,” Rhule noted. “We”ve been cautious with him because we want to ensure he”s ready for the game. He looks fast and is capable of running the football. The entire offense is in sync with him, so we will utilize his mobility and versatility.”

As a true freshman, Lateef started three regular-season games for the Huskers, and he saw action in two additional games, throwing for 722 yards and four touchdowns this season. As a dual-threat quarterback, he also rushed for 98 yards and three touchdowns. Unfortunately, his ability to scramble was hindered after his injury while being tackled during the first half of Nebraska”s loss to Iowa on Black Friday.

His injury cast doubt on his availability for the bowl game, leading him to miss a significant amount of practice time. However, now that he has returned to the field, Rhule expressed confidence that Lateef has gained valuable insights while observing practice from the sidelines, which should aid in his mental growth. “He learned from that experience and looks good out there,” Rhule added. “I”m excited for him to play.”

In addition, Rhule confirmed that offensive lineman Tyler Knaak suffered a broken hand in practice prior to the team”s arrival in Las Vegas. Despite the injury, Knaak is expected to play and will start at right guard against Utah. During Saturday”s practice viewing session, Knaak was seen wearing a cast on his left hand. Knaak, who is originally from Utah and previously played for the Utes, will be stepping in for Rocco Spindler, who opted for surgery on his injured hand sustained during the regular season. Knaak has been with Nebraska for three years after transferring from Utah, participating in 29 games primarily in backup and special teams roles.
