Paul Finebaum Shares Insights on Tennessee QB Joey Aguilar”s Future

Paul Finebaum has offered his perspective on the future of Tennessee quarterback Joey Aguilar, who is currently pursuing an extra year of eligibility through a lawsuit against the NCAA. The Vols are optimistic about Aguilar”s situation, as they have retained a spot for him on the roster while awaiting a decision. Aguilar”s court appearance on Friday did not yield an immediate resolution, leaving him hopeful for a favorable outcome in the near future.

On the “In The Morning” podcast, hosted by Greg McElroy and Cole Cubelic, Finebaum expressed a gut feeling that Aguilar would ultimately be granted the additional year. He noted, “The judge kept referring to Tennessee as “we,” which gives me a sense that Aguilar”s case might be viewed positively.” This sentiment reflects Finebaum”s belief that each case is unique, but he remains hopeful for Aguilar”s prospects.

Should Aguilar be granted this extra year, he would likely resume his role as the starting quarterback for the Vols. In contrast, a denial would ignite a competitive battle for the starting position among Faizon Brandon, Ryan Staub, and George MacIntyre. Aguilar has only been with the Vols for one season after transferring from the UCLA Bruins, where he did not participate in any games. Before that, he gained recognition at Appalachian State, where he was regarded as one of the top quarterbacks in the group of five.

Aguilar had a standout season with the Vols, achieving numerous impressive statistics. As the season approached the bowl game, he ranked among the top 20 nationally in several categories, including passing yards and touchdowns. His passing yard total stood at 3,444, placing him eighth nationally, while he averaged 287.0 yards per game, also seventh in the nation. Aguilar led the SEC in passing yards and yards per game, showcasing his efficiency and skill on the field.

Throughout the season, Aguilar consistently delivered strong performances. He tied a season-high with 29 completions for 299 yards and a touchdown against No. 12 Vanderbilt. His completion percentage peaked at 77.3 during a notable victory over Florida, where he helped snap a prolonged losing streak in Gainesville. Aguilar”s ability to throw for over 350 yards occurred three times this season, including a remarkable outing against No. 18 Oklahoma, where he amassed 393 passing yards.

Aguilar”s debut against Syracuse was also impressive, as he led the Vols to a significant victory, throwing for three touchdowns and completing 16 of 28 attempts for 247 yards. His performance has set a promising foundation for his future at Tennessee, contingent on the outcome of his legal battle for eligibility.
