Terrance Ferguson, the tight end for the Los Angeles Rams, shared insights into his mindset following the 2025 NFL Draft. Selected as the 46th pick, Ferguson emphasized that dwelling on the players picked ahead of him is counterproductive.
In an interview with ESPN”s Sarah Barshop, he stated, “Comparison is the thief of joy,” advising others not to focus on those who were drafted before them. Ferguson acknowledged that many athletes carry a chip on their shoulder regarding their draft position, but he believes it is more beneficial to concentrate on personal improvement rather than worrying about others” achievements.
“Keep those in mind, but not to watch them and worry about what other people are doing,” Ferguson said. “Focus on what your work is and how you can get better and being the best version of yourself.” This philosophy is especially challenging in today”s competitive environment, where social media amplifies comparisons.
The idea of using previous draft positions as motivation is not new, notably popularized by Detroit Lions receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown, who famously keeps a notebook of players drafted before him. In contrast, Ferguson opts for a more introspective approach, prioritizing his development over comparisons.
Looking ahead, Ferguson could experience a breakout season in Los Angeles. After recording 11 receptions for 231 yards and three touchdowns during his rookie year, his playing time increased as the Rams implemented more multi-tight end formations. With Tyler Higbee approaching free agency and Colby Parkinson potentially facing salary cap issues, Ferguson may see a significant rise in his workload for the upcoming season.
