Ravens GM Addresses Lamar Jackson Contract Restructure and Extension Talks

The Baltimore Ravens recently restructured quarterback Lamar Jackson“s contract, creating $40 million in cap space. However, general manager Eric DeCosta clarified that a long-term extension for Jackson did not materialize due to time constraints.

As the offseason approached, many fans anticipated that the Ravens would finalize a new contract with their star quarterback. Instead, the team opted to restructure Jackson”s existing deal, which resulted in significant cap relief but raised questions about the long-term relationship between the player and the organization.

During a media session, DeCosta expressed hope for an extension, noting it is important for both sides. “Certainly hopeful that we”ll get an extension done. It”s important to both parties, but we remain to see what”s going to take place in the future,” he stated.

Fans recall the tumultuous past regarding contract negotiations, including a point when Jackson requested a trade prior to the Ravens securing an extension for him. Currently, Jackson has only two years remaining on his contract, which will make him a free agent in the 2028 offseason. The restructured deal lowers his cap hit to $34.5 million, a significant reduction from the initial $74.5 million projection.

While the restructuring opens the door for potential new deals, it also adds to the narrative of missed opportunities for the Ravens. This offseason has been marked by other setbacks, such as failing to re-sign Tyler Linderbaum and the last-minute withdrawal from a trade involving Maxx Crosby.

Nonetheless, the cap space created plays a crucial role in enabling the Ravens to finalize the deal with defensive end Trey Hendrickson, signing him for four years at $118 million. Jackson”s revised contract may facilitate further moves as the team prepares for the upcoming NFL Draft.

Despite regrets over the Crosby trade and the inability to secure Jackson”s extension, history suggests that the Ravens and Jackson may revisit negotiations in the future, as they have done before.
