Sam Darnold has achieved an incredible turnaround in his career, culminating in a Super Bowl victory with the Seattle Seahawks. Just two years ago, Darnold was a backup for the San Francisco 49ers, studying under head coach Kyle Shanahan and supporting starting quarterback Brock Purdy. Many viewed his career trajectory as a bust, but he has now claimed a championship in a stunning display of resilience.
On Sunday night, Darnold returned to Levi”s Stadium to lift the Lombardi Trophy after a decisive 29-13 victory against the New England Patriots. Reflecting on his journey, Darnold expressed disbelief at how far he had come, stating, “It”s unbelievable. Just everything that”s happened in my career, but to do it with this team, I wouldn”t want it any other way.” He completed 19 of 38 passes for 202 yards and a touchdown during the game.
Despite the triumph, Darnold acknowledged areas for improvement, particularly on offense, praising the efforts of his defense and special teams. His head coach, Mike Macdonald, praised Darnold”s leadership and performance, noting, “All he”s done since he walked in the door is be a tremendous player and a tremendous leader.”
Darnold”s success comes after a tumultuous period in the NFL. The New York Jets traded him, the No. 3 overall pick in the 2018 draft, to the Carolina Panthers three years later for a second-round pick and two sixth-rounders. He spent time with the 49ers and Minnesota Vikings before signing a three-year deal with the Seahawks last spring.
Last season, Darnold showcased his potential with the Vikings, throwing 35 touchdowns and amassing over 4,300 passing yards. However, a disappointing postseason performance raised concerns. Nevertheless, the Seahawks recognized his talent and invested in him, securing a contract worth $55 million guaranteed and trading Geno Smith to the Raiders.
At 28 years old, Darnold responded to the Seahawks” faith by surpassing 4,000 passing yards in the regular season and achieving a career-best 67.7 completion percentage, leading the team to a 14-3 record. His playoff performance was even more impressive, throwing five touchdowns without any interceptions. Following a stellar NFC Championship Game, he faced the Patriots in the Super Bowl, where he maintained composure despite a less explosive performance.
Seahawks receiver Cooper Kupp highlighted Darnold”s determination, stating, “I don”t know if there is a quarterback in NFL history that”s been through the things he”s had to go through in the first five years.” Kupp commended Darnold for believing in himself and overcoming the doubts cast upon him, crediting his hard work and commitment to his process as key to his success.
This victory signifies a historic moment for Darnold, who becomes the first quarterback from the University of Southern California to win a Super Bowl as a starter. His inspiring journey from the sidelines to the pinnacle of the sport serves as a testament to resilience and determination in the highly competitive world of the NFL.
