Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay has expressed his admiration for the impressive performance of wide receiver Puka Nacua, drawing a parallel to a story about legendary receiver Jerry Rice. Nacua recently earned the title of AP First-Team All-Pro, as the Rams prepare to face the Seattle Seahawks this Sunday, with a chance to secure a spot in the Super Bowl.
During a recent discussion about Nacua”s rapid ascent in the league, McVay recalled a lesson from his father regarding Rice, who is widely regarded as the best wide receiver in NFL history. “Nacua has achieved significant success in his first couple of years, particularly with his consistent catching ability,” McVay noted. “He possesses natural hands, which some players might take for granted.”
McVay recounted how Rice”s father used an unconventional method to train his son”s catching skills by dropping bricks into his hands, with a memorable twist. “If he dropped it, it would hit his brother,” McVay said. “That certainly motivated him to focus on catching the ball.” In addition, Rice would develop his concentration by attempting to read the lettering on the football as he caught it, a practice McVay sees reflected in Nacua”s game.
“Rice tried to read the writing on the ball to enhance his focus and concentration,” McVay explained. “I believe Nacua has demonstrated excellent focus and concentration, which allows him to excel in gaining yards after the catch, a remarkable skill for him.” This season, Nacua ranked third in the NFL for yards gained after receptions, leading the league with 129 catches. He concluded the season with 1,715 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns.
Although Nacua”s performance against the Bears in the divisional round was modest, he made several pivotal catches that helped the Rams maintain momentum in the challenging snowy conditions of Chicago.
As the Rams gear up for their playoff clash against the Seahawks, predictions and discussions swirl regarding potential trades, player performances, and the path to the NFC Championship. This matchup is set to be a significant moment for both teams in the ongoing battle for playoff supremacy.
