Stefon Diggs to be Released by Patriots Amid Legal Issues

The New England Patriots have officially informed wide receiver Stefon Diggs that he will be released when the new league year commences next week. The 32-year-old confirmed the news through his social media channels, expressing gratitude to the team with a message highlighting their bond.

This decision follows Diggs” recent legal troubles, as he pleaded not guilty to charges that include felony strangulation, stemming from an incident involving his former personal chef, identified as Mila Adams. However, the Patriots have clarified that his release is not connected to these allegations.

According to NFL Network reporter Tom Pelissero, the franchise”s decision to part ways with Diggs is primarily driven by financial considerations. Reports indicate that Diggs was set to have an additional $6 million in salary become fully guaranteed next week. The Patriots opted to inform him of their decision ahead of time, allowing him to seek opportunities elsewhere. He is expected to officially be released on March 11.

In reaction to the news, Diggs took to social media to express his appreciation for the Patriots organization, stating, “We family forever. Until we meet again.” During his time in New England, Diggs was the leading receiver for the team, racking up 85 receptions, 1,013 receiving yards, and four touchdown catches. His contributions were pivotal in helping the Patriots reach the Super Bowl, where they ultimately fell short against the Seattle Seahawks. Additionally, Diggs established himself as a key target for quarterback Drake Maye, who was a runner-up for the AP NFL MVP award.

Back in December, when Diggs faced serious charges including felony strangulation and misdemeanor assault and battery, the Patriots publicly supported him. A spokesperson stated, “The New England Patriots are aware of the accusations that have been made regarding Stefon Diggs. He has informed the organization that he categorically denies the allegations. We support Stefon and will continue to gather information while cooperating fully with the appropriate authorities and the NFL.” They emphasized their commitment to respecting the ongoing legal matter.

As Diggs prepares to enter free agency, the focus will be on where he might land next, following a season that marked a significant resurgence in his career after a challenging year with the Houston Texans.
