Treylon Burks delivered one of the most remarkable catches of the NFL season during the Washington Commanders” narrow 27-26 overtime defeat against the Denver Broncos on Sunday night. In a pivotal moment, Burks executed a stunning one-handed grab in the end zone that showcased his exceptional skill.
On a third-and-goal from the 5-yard line, Marcus Mariota took a snap from the shotgun formation and launched a fade route toward Burks. Despite tight coverage from cornerback Riley Moss, Burks managed to turn, leap, and extend his right arm to secure the football just before hitting the ground. This impressive play marked Burks” second career touchdown and his first since 2022.
The catch drew significant praise, including from NBC commentator Cris Collinsworth, who likened it to the iconic one-handed catch made by Odell Beckham Jr. in 2014. Notably, Burks wears No. 13, the same number worn by Beckham during his time with the New York Giants. Beckham himself acknowledged the moment on social media, posting “13 13.”
Burks, however, remained humble about the attention, stating, “To me, it was just making a play for the team, honestly. I”m not the type that will sit there and scroll on the internet. I kind of stay away from that.” His performance comes after a challenging period, having undergone surgery on his right hand just three weeks ago.
After being a first-round selection by the Tennessee Titans in 2022, Burks is looking to revive his career. The Commanders took a risk on him despite his recent ACL injury. Coming into this matchup, he had recorded only four catches for 72 yards in the current season.
Commanders head coach Dan Quinn expressed confidence in Burks” potential, saying, “We knew he wasn”t there yet. We said, “We”re not going to miss a step with you, man. We”re going to develop you.” Then you see him in there at 6 a.m. and wanting to learn. This is a guy who wanted to prove it, who wanted to show it, and I thought, “We”re going to give him the space to do that.” I think there”s a lot there, and I”m really excited he”s here.”
