Tyreek Hill Open to Reunion with Mike McDaniel at Chargers

Tyreek Hill has suggested he may be interested in reuniting with former coach Mike McDaniel on the West Coast. Reports indicate that McDaniel is poised to take the role of offensive coordinator for the Los Angeles Chargers.

McDaniel previously served as head coach for the Miami Dolphins, where Hill had a successful tenure after being traded from the Kansas City Chiefs. Under McDaniel”s leadership, Hill recorded two of his best statistical seasons, surpassing 1,700 receiving yards in both 2022 and 2023. However, Hill faced challenges in 2024, ending the season with a significant leg injury that dislocated his knee and caused multiple ligament tears, including his ACL.

As Hill continues his rehabilitation, McDaniel appears set to become the Chargers” offensive coordinator. He has reportedly informed other teams that he is no longer in the running for head coaching positions. On Tuesday evening, ESPN”s Adam Schefter tweeted, “Former Dolphins HC Mike McDaniel is expected to become the Chargers offensive coordinator barring a change of heart.” Schefter added that the Chargers are keen on McDaniel, and the two parties were having dinner that night.

Following the announcement regarding McDaniel”s potential move to the Chargers, Hill expressed his openness to a reunion on social media, posting, “Mike to the chargers hm,” hinting at his interest in joining his former coach again. Back in November, Hill also indicated he would consider a return to Kansas City, posting, “I need to go home.”

With Miami having appointed a new general manager, Jon-Eric Sullivan, and a new head coach, Jeff Hafley, it remains uncertain whether Hill will remain with the Dolphins for the upcoming 2026 season. The 31-year-old is entering the last year of a three-year extension he signed in 2024, which included a substantial amount of guaranteed money added to a previous deal. His 2026 salary is not guaranteed, but should he remain on the Dolphins” roster by March, he will receive a guaranteed sum along with a roster bonus.

For the Dolphins to part ways with Hill, they would need to either designate him as a post-June 1 cut or trade him, potentially saving a significant amount in salary cap space while incurring a dead cap hit in subsequent years.

Following his leg injury, Hill”s agent, Drew Rosenhaus, reaffirmed his client”s determination to return to the NFL, stating, “It”s about rehab, and he will play next season. The realistic goal is the start of the season.”
