UCF safety Phil Dunnam is looking to build on his impressive performance after recording three interceptions in last week”s 30-27 loss to Houston. The Miami native, who transferred from FAU, has established himself as a vital player in the Knights” secondary.
During spring camp, Dunnam had a knack for making plays, often coming away with interceptions. Defensive coordinator Alex Grinch noted that it was reminiscent of a player hitting multiple home runs in practice, wishing to save some for game day. Currently, Dunnam is rated as the second-best safety in the Big 12, only behind Dalton Johnson from Arizona.
Although he did not have any interceptions in the first eight games of the season, he made history on Friday night with his three picks against the Cougars. The highlight was his first career pick-six, which he returned 43 yards. Reflecting on the moment, Dunnam said, “When I got to the end zone, I”m really just soaking it all in. That”s why you saw me put my hands out, just soaking it all in. It was a great feeling.”
Grinch recalled his time at Wyoming when he saw a player achieve a similar feat, stating that performances like Dunnam”s are rare. “I wish I could say it was commonplace, but a lot of times those things are tips or very unique plays,” he remarked. “In Phil”s case, it was about making a play. I wouldn”t attach any luck to those things, which is really cool.”
Looking ahead, Dunnam faces a challenging road game against No. 6 Texas Tech, who boasts a strong offense, averaging 42 points per game and ranking high in total offense. Dunnam expressed his determination to carry the momentum from his recent performance into the upcoming game, stating, “After the game on Friday, I was already looking at this week. I”m trying to do it again. I”m trying to help this team in multiple ways as I can to get a win.”
