Unexpected Candidate Surfaces for Reds Opening Day Roster Spot

As Spring Training unfolds, the Cincinnati Reds are navigating several intriguing storylines, particularly regarding their roster composition. With a few spots still up for grabs, one unexpected name has emerged in the conversation for a bullpen position: Tejay Antone.

According to Reds beat reporter Mark Sheldon, Antone, a non-roster invitee, is making strides in his recovery from a third Tommy John surgery, which he underwent in 2024. Sheldon noted, “If anybody knows how to play the underdog role and make a team, it”s this guy.” Antone previously secured a roster spot in 2024 after coming back from his second surgery, demonstrating his resilience and determination.

Since 2020, Antone has faced significant challenges, appearing in only 45 games due to ongoing elbow issues. However, if he can stay healthy and secure a spot on the team, he could be a strong contender for the National League Comeback Player of the Year Award.

At 32 years old, Antone has endured a tough journey, marked by a series of injuries. In 2025, he made a total of 15 appearances across various minor league levels, giving up 17 runs on 23 hits over 15 innings while walking nine batters and striking out 15. In his 2026 Spring Training debut, Antone made a positive impression by pitching a flawless sixth inning.

His teammates are also rallying behind him. Fellow pitcher Tony Santillan expressed admiration for Antone”s journey, stating, “What he has done is incredible. You hear three (surgeries), and that doesn”t happen. Actually witnessing it, he looks really good. Watching him, you”d have never guessed he was on his third (Tommy John). I”m very happy for him. It hasn”t been an easy road for him. I have nothing but respect and love for him.”

If Antone manages to make the Opening Day roster, it would undoubtedly become a compelling narrative in Major League Baseball. He represents hope and perseverance, capturing the attention of fans and teammates alike.
