The Vestavia Hills flag football team secured a place in the Alabama High School Athletic Association state championship game by defeating Spain Park 20-19. This thrilling victory came down to the wire, with standout quarterback Julia Rose making a crucial touchdown pass to Alexis Rubin with less than five minutes remaining in the game.
With the stakes high, including a remarkable 26-game winning streak on the line, Rose, the state record-holder for passing yards and touchdowns, once again showcased her talent. The Rebels were trailing 13-0 at one point in the first quarter, but Rose”s determination propelled her team back into contention.
After connecting with Rubin for an 8-yard touchdown, Rose”s subsequent throw to Caroline Nintzel for the extra point was a pivotal moment, especially since the initial attempt was nullified by an offensive pass interference penalty against Vestavia Hills. This comeback solidified the Rebels” advancement to the championship game on December 3 at Birmingham”s Protective Stadium, where they will face the two-time defending champions, Central-Phenix City.
Head coach Daniel Davis praised Rose”s performance, stating, “I can”t say enough about Julia Rose. She willed us to the win. She was not going to be denied.” Rose”s impressive stats included adding 288 yards to her already record-breaking total of 6,617 passing yards, along with three touchdown passes that brought her total to 121.
Despite the loss, Spain Park initially took control of the game through a strong defensive strategy. The Jaguars” freshman Libby Gray and senior Josie Gray pressured Rose throughout, leading to an interception by Rory Payton, who returned it 44 yards for a touchdown. “Our game plan was to pressure her, and it was working for most of the game,” said Spain Park coach Carmen Starr.
Spain Park extended their lead to 13-0 when Jenna Kate Hutchison connected with Abby Whatley for a 10-yard touchdown pass. However, Rose was able to narrow the gap by throwing a 15-yard touchdown pass to Molly Mac Sharp before halftime. She later tied the game with another touchdown pass to Sharp for ten yards.
As the game progressed, Hutchison found Whatley again on a fourth-down play for a 10-yard touchdown, giving Spain Park a brief 19-13 lead late in the third quarter. Hutchison completed 22 of 42 passes for 186 yards in the game.
The Rebels” defense also made key contributions, with Kate Fitzpatrick and Rubin both securing interceptions. This victory marked Vestavia”s third win over their Region 5 rivals this season, demonstrating their dominance in the league.
