Gabby Logan Reflects on Father Terry Yorath”s Legacy and Passing

Sports broadcaster Gabby Logan has paid tribute to her father, Terry Yorath, describing him as a “kind-hearted and generous man” with a “wicked sense of humour.” Yorath, a former footballer who represented Wales and played for Leeds, passed away earlier this week at the age of 75, leaving his family in shock.

In an emotional post on Instagram, Logan recalled a heartfelt conversation she had with her father just days before his passing. On Wednesday, they debated whether roast potatoes were superior to mashed potatoes while discussing his plans for a meal he wished for upon returning home. “We knew he had limited time, but it is still a shock,” she stated after announcing his death.

Logan expressed gratitude for the outpouring of love and support they received during this difficult time. “Our Dad, a warrior on the football pitch, captaining club and country, would have hated all the attention,” she wrote. She also reflected on the many stories shared by strangers, noting how her father had touched the lives of so many.

Having had to leave her role midway through presenting BBC”s Match Of The Day due to a “family emergency,” Logan shared more about her father”s legacy. She mentioned that he would now be reunited with her brother, Daniel, who passed away at the young age of 15 in 1992 from a genetic heart condition after playing football with him.

Yorath”s career included serving as a player-assistant coach for Bradford, where he witnessed the tragic fire at Valley Parade in 1985 that claimed 56 lives. Logan shared her sorrow about the pain her father endured throughout his life, highlighting the lasting impact of the Bradford fire and the loss of Daniel.

In her tribute, she thanked her father for instilling values of fairness and for creating cherished memories, such as playing rounders and challenging her to card games. “Thank you, Dad, for giving me a lifelong love of sport,” she added, expressing her appreciation for his humor and kindness.

She also acknowledged the staff at St James”s University Hospital in Leeds for their care, calling them “Angels.” Fellow TV presenter Davina McCall commented on her post, praising its beauty, while Claudia Winkleman offered her love and support during this challenging time.

Yorath”s contributions to football and the lasting impression he left on his family and the community will be remembered fondly by all who knew him.
