Groveton Indians Secure Playoff Spot Against San Augustine on Friday

After a challenging 2024 season where they went winless, the Groveton Indians have made a remarkable comeback. With a record of 3-7 and finishing fourth in District 12-2A DI, they have clinched a spot in the postseason.

This Friday at 7 p.m., the Indians will take on the San Augustine Wolves, who are the champions of District 11-2A DI, at Nacogdoches High School. The Wolves hold a record of 7-3 and finished their district play with a 4-1 record.

First-year head coach Scott Green expressed the significance of this playoff appearance for the Groveton community, stating, “One thing I”ve learned about being in Groveton is that being in the playoffs is important to them. We”ve come a long way since I got here in February, and to go from an 0-10 season to getting three wins and reaching the playoffs is big for the program.” He added that this achievement provides motivation for continuous improvement.

Despite their initial struggles this season, the Indians began with a promising 38-19 victory against Alto. However, they faced setbacks with losses to Trinity, Lovelady, Grapeland, and Frankston, which left them with a 1-4 record. After losing their district opener to Corrigan-Camden, Groveton rebounded with a 37-12 win over Normangee and a crucial 33-18 victory against Hearne, which secured their playoff berth.

Green has noted significant progress within the team, particularly in their work ethic. “We started in the weight room and went aggressive in that area. You can see things changing,” he remarked. “One thing I can say about this group is that we never quit; we fight to the end, and that”s something we”re going to build on.”

The San Augustine Wolves finished their district play tied for first with Garrison but secured the top spot through a tiebreaker victory against them. Their only district loss came against Timpson, which ended in a 34-13 defeat last week. The winner of the Groveton vs. San Augustine matchup will advance to face the winner of the game between Waskom and Cooper.
