The Iola Middle School Mustangs are gaining momentum as they approach the postseason, having secured two victories out of three games against Anderson County on Thursday. With the end of the regular season nearing, the Mustangs are positioned well for the upcoming Pioneer League Middle School Basketball Tournament.
The evening began positively for the Mustangs, particularly the seventh-grade varsity team, which achieved a solid win with a score of 40-23. Guard Landon Desmarteau led the charge, contributing a remarkable 18 points. Teammates Matthew Holding and Greyson Skahan supported the effort with six points each. This victory improved the Mustangs” record to 6-4, setting them up for their next game against Wellsville.
The eighth-grade varsity team followed suit, overcoming a sluggish start to dominate their game 49-21. This victory was marked by a collective team effort, with nine players contributing to the scoreboard. Austin Campbell led the team with 12 points, while Cade Curry added 11 points and Milo Franklin chipped in with nine points. This win also brought the eighth graders to a 6-4 record.
In junior varsity action, the Mustangs faced a tougher challenge and narrowly lost 18-16. Evan Boeken emerged as the leading scorer for the junior varsity team with two field goals, while six other players each scored a single basket.
The Mustangs are scheduled to return to the court on Monday for an away game against Wellsville, with the action set to begin at 5 PM.
