When the Stearns-Schenck cooperative football team returned home after their state title victory on Saturday, a parade of supporters welcomed them through three towns. This moment marked a significant transformation from historic rivalries to a united celebration of success.
The Stearns High School in Millinocket and Schenck High School in East Millinocket have turned what was once a fierce competition between their towns into a collaborative effort that culminated in a championship win. The Schenck team also includes players from neighboring Medway, enhancing the sense of community during the celebrations following their triumph in the 8-man small school state championship in Auburn.
“It”s incredible to see everyone from Medway, East Millinocket, and Millinocket come together to support these kids,” said Nick Cullen, the athletic director and assistant football coach at Stearns. “This teamwork is a true example of what we can achieve when we unite.”
Head coach Cody Herring described the overwhelming support upon the team”s return, noting that a long line of cars awaited them as they exited the interstate in Medway. “The sense of community pride in our tri-town area is truly remarkable,” Herring stated.
In contrast to the past, when the Minutemen last claimed a championship title in 1998 with an all-Sterans roster, this year”s win showcased a different spirit. The once-thriving mills in both towns have closed, and an aging population has prompted leaders to reconsider community boundaries. The cooperative football team symbolizes this new reality, proving that collaboration can yield powerful results.
Senior co-captain Trevor VanDine, one of several players from Schenck, expressed awe at the warm reception. “It felt surreal, like an out-of-body experience,” he remarked. Yet, the gold trophy now in the Stearns trophy case confirms the reality of their achievement.
“This is a true team effort,” Herring emphasized. “With only 20 players, each one made significant contributions throughout the season.”
Unity on the Field
The Minutemen”s initial touchdowns during the championship match against Old Orchard Beach illustrated their teamwork. Lucas Pelkey, a senior co-captain and notable rusher, scored the first points, followed by VanDine”s touchdown catch. This connection between players from different towns exemplified the success of their cooperation.
Cullen stated, “We don”t view them as kids from Stearns or Schenck; they are just football players who get along well.” Both Pelkey and VanDine highlighted the friendships that have blossomed, noting their competitiveness remains friendly.
Celebrating past achievements, Kris Davis, a local business owner and former cheerleader, remarked on the significance of this joint victory. “This win helps to unite the towns,” she said.
Defensive Triumph Secures Victory
The Minutemen”s championship win would not have been possible without their defense”s critical plays in the final moments of the game. After securing a 20-12 lead with a third touchdown, the team faced a fierce response from Old Orchard. However, their defense rallied to stop a two-point conversion attempt, showcasing their determination and teamwork.
“Our coach always emphasizes that we need eight players pursuing the ball,” Pelkey explained regarding that pivotal play. Their efforts not only preserved the lead but also set the stage for a fumble recovery by freshmen players, sealing the victory.
This momentous win will resonate for years, inspiring younger generations and bringing joy to alumni who have long awaited another championship.
John Montgomery, athletic director of Schenck and a former Stearns athlete, expressed pride at the achievement. “Witnessing this victory is incredibly special and emotional for me,” he shared.
As the towns unite in support of their team, this championship is more than just a football win; it symbolizes a renewed sense of community. “This is about much more than sports,” said Cullen, reflecting on the collective effort that transcended the game.
With the Stearns program revitalized under Herring”s leadership, the dedication of players like Pelkey serves as an example of the hard work that has led to their success. As they continue to build on this collaborative spirit, the Minutemen look forward to future triumphs together.
