The Rainier High School football team has secured a spot in the state tournament for the first time since 2019 by overcoming Friday Harbor with a score of 52-38 in Oak Harbor on Saturday.
Despite starting the season winless after four games, the Mountaineers rallied to win five of their last six games, propelling them into the state playoffs. Senior running back Dorien Cano was instrumental in the victory, contributing four rushing touchdowns.
Head coach Bartell expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “It”s awesome. We talked last week after the win against Centralia about getting the guys up front and exploiting that strength we have.” He also highlighted the defensive strategy, noting, “Defensively, we were able to neutralize a little bit of what they were doing early. Playing six in coverage was key there for us on defense.”
With a season record of 5-5, the Mountaineers are now looking to achieve their first victory in the state tournament since 1992. The 2B state bracket will be announced on Sunday.
