In a remarkable display of resilience, Rio Hondo Prep secured its third consecutive CIF Southern Section championship by defeating Redondo Union 29-7 on November 29, 2025. The championship game took place at Redondo Union High School in Redondo Beach, where the Kares overcame the loss of their star running back Noah Penunuri, who was sidelined with injuries after just two plays.
The Kares showcased their depth and collective spirit as six different players contributed to a robust ground game, amassing 226 yards on 50 carries. Quarterback Yanick Diaz also played a crucial role, throwing for 77 yards, including a pivotal 59-yard completion to Calogero Chico that set up a touchdown.
“Everybody has that next man up mentality,” Chico stated after the game. “We all have that belief that we”re not going to back down, and that we”re going to step up and do it.” This victory was particularly impressive for the small private school in Arcadia, which has only 82 boys enrolled.
With this win, the Kares maintained their perfect record of 14-0 for the season. They faced a formidable opponent in the Sea Hawks, who had previously triumphed over well-established teams such as St. Paul and Loyola to reach the championship. Following this victory, the Kares now set their sights on the CIF State regional playoffs, with matchups to be determined.
In the game, Nate Shine led the Kares” rushing attack with 61 yards and a touchdown, while Christian Lee added 53 yards and another score. The team”s performance reflected their strong coaching and preparation. Shine remarked, “It”s a team effort; in our offense anyone can touch the ball.” He emphasized the outstanding coaching staff, noting that despite facing larger opponents in every competition over the past three years, they consistently emerged victorious.
The Kares” journey through the playoffs has been historic, following previous championships in Division 9 and Division 7. This achievement cements their place among the great dynasties of the San Gabriel Valley. Coach Mark Carson expressed his pride, stating, “We wanted the fight. We wanted the highest level in the worst way to see what we can do and what we”re made of.”
Despite an early setback when Bo Ausmus of Redondo Union scored on a 99-yard touchdown run, the Kares quickly regained control. They tied the game with a 16-yard touchdown run by Elias Har, concluding a 10-play, 73-yard drive. Following a defensive stop, Diaz connected with Chico for the long gain that put the Kares ahead.
The momentum shifted significantly after Aiden Delgadillo intercepted a pass and returned it for another touchdown, pushing the lead to 20-7 early in the second half. The Kares continued to dominate, with Lee scoring again to extend the lead further. Easton Jara capped off the scoring with a field goal.
With this championship, Rio Hondo Prep now claims its 17th title, just behind Long Beach Poly”s record of 20 CIF-SS championships. The Kares are ready to carry this momentum into the state playoffs, aiming to continue their remarkable season.
