Santa Margarita High School”s football team achieved a remarkable feat on Saturday by clinching the CIF State Open Division championship, marking the program”s first state title since 2011. The Eagles triumphed over the previously undefeated De La Salle with a commanding score of 47-13 at Saddleback College in Mission Viejo.
This victory capped off a stunning turnaround for Santa Margarita, which had finished the previous season with a 5-7 record and faced challenges, including an alleged hazing incident last year. Under the guidance of first-year head coach Carson Palmer, the Eagles demonstrated their resilience and growth throughout the season.
In front of a supportive crowd, Trent Mosley, a USC signee, delivered an outstanding performance, continuing his strong showing from the CIF-SS Division 1 final. Mosley recorded 11 receptions for 183 yards and found the end zone three times during the game. The Eagles, ranked No. 2 nationally by HSratings.com, dominated the first half, leading 35-7 at halftime without punting in the first three quarters.
The scoring began early as Mosley executed a 7-yard run for a touchdown just 58 seconds into the game. Following a blocked field goal by defensive lineman Simote Katoanga, Mosley caught a 34-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Trace Johnson a minute later. The Eagles” rapid-fire offense continued with a trick play that resulted in a 20-yard touchdown from tight end Luke Gazzaniga.
As the first half neared its conclusion, Mosley caught another touchdown pass and powered through defenders to convert a crucial 2-point play. The Eagles showcased their defensive prowess as linebacker Leki Holani recorded a sack to end the first half, sending the team into the locker room to a standing ovation from their fans.
In the second half, safety Siua Holani added to the excitement with a 43-yard interception return for a touchdown, further solidifying Santa Margarita”s dominance. Johnson completed 17 of 20 passes for 247 yards and four touchdowns, leading the team to a decisive victory.
Santa Margarita”s season culminated after outscoring its playoff opponents by a combined total of 94-22. This championship not only signifies their first state title in over a decade but also highlights their return to prominence in high school football, alongside the powerhouses of the Trinity League.
