Wicknell Chivayo Donates New Bus to Highlanders FC Amid Controversy

BULAWAYO – The centenary celebrations for Highlanders Football Club this year will be highlighted by the introduction of a new 75-seater team bus valued at $285,000. This addition is a significant milestone for the club as it commemorates its 100-year history, even as there are ongoing divisions among fans regarding the influence of its benefactor.

Businessman Wicknell Chivayo, a figure often surrounded by controversy, has fulfilled his commitment to donate a new Higer bus to the oldest football club in the country. Along with the bus, he has provided a financial injection of $300,000 aimed at bolstering the team”s preparations for the upcoming season.

The formal handover of the bus is scheduled for Tuesday, with the ceremony being officiated by Vice President Kembo Mohadi. This event showcases the growing significance of Chivayo”s contribution to the club.

Chivayo”s increasing involvement with Highlanders has led to a polarized response from the club”s supporters. Some fans have expressed skepticism regarding his motives and the extent of his engagement in the club”s management. Tensions rose recently when the club reversed its decision to appoint South African coach Thabo Senong, ultimately naming former Warriors captain Benjani Mwaruwari as the new head coach. This abrupt change has been widely perceived as a result of Chivayo”s influence, although the club has not provided clarity on the decision-making process.

In defense of his actions, Chivayo has denied any intentions of orchestrating a takeover, asserting that his role is strictly that of a devoted supporter offering assistance. The new bus, featuring modern amenities, represents a significant upgrade from the vehicle previously donated by Nyaradzo Funeral Assurance in 2015. This change further emphasizes the scale of Chivayo”s contributions and their growing prominence within the club.
