San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch addressed the media regarding the team”s decisions during the NFL trade deadline, which passed without any new acquisitions for the roster. Despite a solid 6-3 record, the 49ers chose not to make any deals, leading to speculation among fans about the team”s inactivity in enhancing their roster, particularly in the pass rush area.
Lynch acknowledged the concerns from the fan base and expressed appreciation for their passion. However, he emphasized the importance of prudent business decisions. “We weren”t going to get fleeced,” Lynch stated. “We weren”t going to overpay. It”s just not good business. As they say, sometimes the best deals are the ones you don”t make. In this case, we felt that was the best course.” This approach reflects a commitment to maintaining the long-term health of the franchise rather than making impulsive trades.
The 49ers have been active leading up to the trade deadline, completing four trades since March. The most recent was for defensive end/tackle Keion White, a former second-round pick from New England, who was acquired alongside a seventh-round pick in exchange for a sixth-round pick from the 49ers. White made his debut in a victory over the New York Giants, where he played 33 snaps after a brief practice period.
Throughout the trading period, the 49ers also acquired edge rusher Bryce Huff, running back Brian Robinson Jr., and wide receiver/return specialist Skyy Moore. In these transactions, the team took on additional salary, including $7.95 million for Huff and $1.5 million for Moore.
Both Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan had reiterated their stance before the deadline, indicating a reluctance to deplete draft capital or disrupt the salary structure in future years. They also considered the possibility of acquiring players who might be lost to free agency in 2026.
Regarding injuries, Lynch provided updates on quarterback Brock Purdy, who is making progress from a right turf toe injury and may be available for the upcoming game against the Rams. Meanwhile, wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk is not expected to have his practice window opened this week, but Lynch anticipates that it will happen soon.
