The Auburn Tigers have made a significant move in the transfer portal by acquiring quarterback Byrum Brown, who is set to become the starting quarterback for the 2026 season. This transfer comes after the hiring of Brown”s former coach, Alex Golesh, who took over Auburn”s program last month, replacing Hugh Freeze.
After a standout season with the University of South Florida (USF), Brown emerged as one of the most sought-after players in the transfer portal. The need for a reliable quarterback at Auburn became apparent when all three of their quarterbacks—Jackson Arnold, Ashton Daniels, and Deuce Knight—decided to transfer out after just one season.
Brown”s impressive performance at USF included completing 66.3% of his passes for 3,158 yards, resulting in 28 touchdowns against seven interceptions. Additionally, he proved to be a dual-threat quarterback, rushing for 1,008 yards and scoring 14 rushing touchdowns. His overall statistics reflect a remarkable total of 4,116 yards and 42 touchdowns for the season, contributing to USF”s successful 9-4 finish, with a 9-3 record under Golesh.
With Brown”s arrival, the Tigers hope to improve upon their disappointing 5-7 record from the previous season. Not only does Brown bring talent to the quarterback position, but he will also have several familiar targets in the passing game. Wide receiver Jeremiah Koger has already signed on with Auburn, joining fellow wideouts Christian Neptune and Kory Pettigrew, who also transferred to the Plains. Tight end Jonathan Echols has made the transition from Tampa to Auburn as well.
In addition to Brown, Auburn has two other quarterback options, including three-star recruit Rhys Brush, who signed during the early signing period, and Locklan Hewlett, a transfer from USF.
