Chiefs Trade Cornerback Trent McDuffie to Rams for Draft Picks

The Kansas City Chiefs have reached an agreement with the Los Angeles Rams to trade standout cornerback Trent McDuffie. The deal, which has yet to be finalized, involves multiple draft picks, according to sources familiar with the negotiations.

As part of the trade, Kansas City is set to receive the 29th overall pick in the upcoming draft, along with a fifth-round and sixth-round selection this spring, and a third-round pick for the following year. This move significantly addresses the Rams” pressing need for an elite cornerback to enhance their subpar secondary, which ranked 19th in the NFL for pass defense last season.

Trent McDuffie, a first-round draft choice in 2022, has established himself as a formidable presence on the field. Over his four seasons in the league, he has been a key contributor, earning first-team AP All-Pro honors as a slot cornerback in 2023 and a second-team selection in 2024. Known for his exceptional coverage skills, ability to pressure quarterbacks, and knack for making impactful tackles, McDuffie has recorded three interceptions and 5.5 sacks in his career.

Entering the final year of his rookie contract, McDuffie is set to earn $13.6 million this season. The Rams are expected to begin discussions regarding a long-term contract, as they have the salary cap space to accommodate his contract. Kansas City, on the other hand, faced challenges in maintaining McDuffie”s salary under their cap due to existing high-value contracts with key players such as quarterback Patrick Mahomes and defensive linemen Chris Jones and George Karlaftis.

This trade continues a trend for the Chiefs, who have previously parted ways with prominent defensive backs upon reaching contract eligibility. Two years ago, they traded L”Jarius Sneed to the Tennessee Titans. For the Rams, this acquisition is crucial as their cornerbacks were a notable weakness during their journey to the NFC Championship game last season, where they ultimately lost to the Seattle Seahawks, the eventual Super Bowl champions.

General manager Les Snead highlighted the need to bolster the cornerback position following the previous season”s shortcomings. The Rams also hold the 13th overall pick in this year”s draft, acquired from Atlanta last year, allowing them to further enhance their roster. McDuffie”s return to Los Angeles is particularly fitting, as he grew up in the suburbs of the city and played for St. John Bosco High School before attending the University of Washington.

McDuffie aligns with the Rams” preference for versatile cornerbacks who can excel in various defensive roles. The team has already re-signed safety Quentin Lake, who is expected to take on a role similar to that previously held by All-Pro Jalen Ramsey.

Throughout his career, McDuffie has emerged as a leader among cornerbacks, leading in quarterback pressures and forced fumbles, showcasing his all-around talent on the field.
