The New York Giants made significant moves on Saturday, enhancing their offense led by quarterback Jaxson Dart with the addition of veteran wide receiver Darnell Mooney. This strategic signing comes as head coach John Harbaugh aims to reshape the team”s offensive strategy ahead of the 2026 season.
According to ESPN insider Jeremy Fowler, the Giants are set to sign Mooney, which will provide Dart with an additional weapon for downfield plays. “Free agent wide receiver Darnell Mooney plans to sign with the Giants, per source,” Fowler reported. “More speed on the way for Jaxson Dart.”
Mooney has spent the last two seasons with the Atlanta Falcons, where he accumulated 96 receptions for 1,435 yards and six touchdowns over 31 games. The Falcons had previously signed him to a three-year, $39 million contract in 2024, and he had a productive debut season, recording 64 catches for 992 yards and five touchdowns. However, his second season was marred by a shoulder injury sustained during training camp in 2025, limiting his effectiveness. He finished that season with 32 receptions for 443 yards and one touchdown before being released by Atlanta.
Giants” Draft Strategy Shifts
In addition to strengthening their receiving corps, the Giants are also making waves ahead of the upcoming draft. Recently, reports surfaced that Jeremiyah Love, a standout running back from Notre Dame, visited the Giants for a pre-draft meeting. This visit is viewed as a Top 30 prospect evaluation, indicating that New York is seriously considering the explosive playmaker, despite previous projections linking him to other teams with pressing needs at the running back position.
Love”s impressive performance at the NFL Scouting Combine has raised his profile among draft prospects for 2026. Before this recent meeting, most analysts had projected him to be selected by teams such as the Arizona Cardinals at No 3, the Tennessee Titans at No 4, and the Washington Commanders at No 7. With the Giants holding the No 5 overall pick, their newfound interest in Love adds an element of unpredictability to the draft landscape.
Running Back Depth Considerations
The Giants” interest in Love is intriguing, particularly since the running back position was not previously seen as a critical need for the team. This perception has been shaped by the emergence of Cam Skattebo, the team”s fourth-round pick in 2025. Skattebo quickly became one of the most dynamic players on the roster before his rookie season was cut short by an ankle injury. In just eight games, he rushed for 410 yards and five touchdowns and made contributions in the passing game with 24 receptions for 207 yards and two additional scores. His standout performance came in a Week 6 win over the Philadelphia Eagles, where he achieved three rushing touchdowns, becoming only the second rookie running back in franchise history to accomplish such a feat in a single game.
