Isaiah Hodgins is making his way back to New York, having reached an agreement to rejoin the Giants. This news was initially reported by Dan Duggan of The Athletic, and Hodgins has since confirmed the return, according to ESPN”s Jordan Raanan.
Hodgins was previously on the practice squad of the Pittsburgh Steelers but will now be added to the Giants” active roster. This development follows the departure of Lil”Jordan Humphrey from New York”s taxi squad as he returned to the Denver Broncos. The Giants have been dealing with injuries in their receiving corps, particularly with Malik Nabers sidelined due to an ACL injury. The team has faced significant challenges in the passing game since this setback, and now they could also be without Darius Slayton, who is dealing with a hamstring issue.
The reunion with Hodgins could provide the Giants with immediate support in their receiving unit. The former sixth-round pick of the Buffalo Bills had a modest start in his NFL career, appearing in only three regular season games with the Bills before making his way to New York. During his tenure with the Giants in 2022, he recorded 391 receiving yards and played a significant role in the offense the following year. However, the 2024 season proved more challenging for the 27-year-old, as he frequently moved on and off the Giants” active roster and only participated in three games.
At the conclusion of the last season, Hodgins signed a futures contract with the San Francisco 49ers, where he spent training camp, but was unable to make the final roster. Subsequently, he joined the Steelers on a practice squad deal, yet he did not see any game action in Pittsburgh. Now, back in a familiar setting, Hodgins aims to make an impact on the field.
The Giants are set to begin the post-Brian Daboll era with a matchup against the Green Bay Packers on Sunday. It will be intriguing to see if Hodgins takes the field in that game, potentially filling a depth role in the offense. Regardless, his addition could be crucial as the team looks to navigate the closing weeks of the season and secure a longer-term position in New York.
