Lions” David Montgomery Seeks Trade Amid Interest from Multiple Teams

The situation surrounding David Montgomery of the Detroit Lions has taken a turn, as reports indicate he is eager to leave the team. Four franchises—the New York Giants, Seattle Seahawks, Kansas City Chiefs, and Houston Texans—are believed to be potential suitors.

According to ESPN“s Jeremy Fowler, the Lions may look to trade Montgomery, who has a manageable contract at $6 million for 2026. The Lions are reportedly seeking a Day 3 draft pick, possibly a fifth-round selection, in exchange for the running back. Fowler noted, “At running back, the Lions” David Montgomery wants out, has a reasonable contract, and is 28. That has value.”

Montgomery”s desire for a trade stems from a diminished role behind teammate Jahmyr Gibbs during the previous season. Lions general manager Brad Holmes has acknowledged the possibility of Montgomery not returning in 2026, stating, “Those are discussions that we”re going to have a lot more in depth, in terms of, like, what is the best plan for him going forward? Is it somewhere else, or whatever the case be?”

Among the teams interested, Fowler pointed out that the Seahawks could be a viable option if Kenneth Walker III, a pending free agent, does not re-sign. “Seattle makes sense here if it can”t re-sign Kenneth Walker III,” he wrote.

Additionally, ESPN“s Dan Graziano mentioned that Walker”s market is strong enough that he may not be returning to Seattle. The Giants, Chiefs, and Texans are also expected to explore the running back market, considering their current roster situations.

The Chiefs face uncertainty with two running backs, Isiah Pacheco and Kareem Hunt, both of whom are pending free agents after a season that did not meet expectations. Conversely, the Texans are likely to part ways with Joe Mixon, who missed the entirety of last season, indicating a need for a veteran presence alongside Woody Marks and Jawhar Jordan.

As for the Giants, a report by Jordan Raanan of ESPN highlighted their intention to establish a stronger ground game. They are reportedly eyeing several prominent running backs in free agency and the draft, including Walker, Travis Etienne, and Jeremiyah Love. If they fail to secure a top-tier option, a trade for Montgomery might become an appealing alternative, given his physical running style aligns with their objectives.
