The New England Patriots have made a notable addition to their practice squad, signing wide receiver Brenden Rice on Wednesday. This decision comes in the wake of an injury affecting one of the team”s starters.
Head coach Mike Vrabel addressed the signing, highlighting the attributes that led the team to pursue Rice. “Good size,” Vrabel noted. “I think he”s shown the ability to learn quickly. I think that was something that”s important at this time of year, being able to get a guy in here that can help us in multiple spots.” He emphasized the necessity for players to approach practice with the mindset of a starter, especially as the season progresses.
Brenden Rice, who is the son of Pro Football Hall of Famer Jerry Rice, was a seventh-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft out of USC. Although he did not record any receiving statistics during his brief time with the Los Angeles Chargers last season, his potential remains a focal point for the Patriots.
The Patriots currently have three wide receivers on their practice squad, including Rice, John Jiles, and Jeremiah Webb. These players are expected to provide depth behind the active roster, which features receivers such as Stefon Diggs, Kayshon Boutte, Mack Hollins, DeMario Douglas, Kyle Williams, and Efton Chism. Notably, Boutte is nursing a hamstring injury, further underscoring the need for added depth at the position.
As the Patriots prepare for their upcoming games, Rice”s experience and size could be critical in their offensive strategy, especially as they navigate the challenges of the season.
