The Las Vegas Raiders are confronted with several significant decisions this offseason, particularly regarding their quarterback situation. Following a challenging season that resulted in only three wins, the organization swiftly moved on from former head coach Pete Carroll, allowing them to promptly seek a new leader for the team.
The Raiders have appointed Klint Kubiak as their new head coach. His subsequent actions indicate a desire for stability within the team. Notably, he retained most of the defensive coordinators, likely aiming to provide continuity for players like Maxx Crosby.
A pivotal choice Kubiak faces is related to the upcoming NFL draft, where the Raiders hold the first overall pick. Fernando Mendoza has emerged as a top prospect, showcasing qualities that align with what the Raiders have been searching for in a quarterback. He remains composed under pressure, seems well-suited for Kubiak”s system, and brings a strong leadership presence to the locker room. Although Mendoza may not be viewed as a generational talent, he represents the best option for the Raiders since Derek Carr left the organization.
However, this situation creates a dilemma for the team, particularly concerning Geno Smith, who was signed during Carroll”s tenure. Originally intended to serve as a bridge quarterback, Smith”s performance did not meet expectations, and he ended up ranking among the league”s least effective starters. With the Raiders poised to draft their future franchise quarterback, Smith”s role would likely shift to that of a backup.
There is a valid argument for retaining Smith as a backup due to his experience, which could be beneficial for mentoring Mendoza. Yet, the Raiders may find strong motivation to part ways with him. Over the course of a disappointing season, Smith”s rapport with fans has deteriorated. Some segments of the fanbase may prefer his departure entirely.
Moreover, releasing Smith would free up approximately $8 million in salary cap space. With the Raiders currently having the second-most cap space in the league, this additional financial flexibility could be channeled into addressing other pressing roster needs. Ultimately, the benefits of cutting Smith may outweigh the rationale for keeping him on the roster.
