Seattle Seahawks Sign Former Colts Safety Rodney Thomas II in Free Agency

The Seattle Seahawks have made a significant addition to their secondary by signing former Indianapolis Colts safety Rodney Thomas II. This move marks the Seahawks” first venture into outside free agency this year. According to reports from Tom Pelissero, Thomas is set to join Seattle, enhancing their defensive backfield.

Thomas, who hails from Yale, was selected in the seventh round of the 2022 NFL Draft by the Colts. Prior to that, he had caught the attention of the Seahawks, having participated in a pre-draft visit with the team. Throughout his rookie season, he demonstrated resilience by securing a spot on the Colts” 53-man roster, eventually becoming their starting strong safety in his second year.

However, in 2024, the Colts opted for Nick Cross as their starting safety, which limited Thomas”s playing time. Despite not being a starter recently, he has remained a valuable asset on special teams for Indianapolis.

The need for additional safety depth in Seattle became apparent following the departure of safety Coby Bryant, who signed with the Chicago Bears during free agency. Thomas”s arrival raises questions about the competition for starting roles, particularly with Ty Okada as a potential starter alongside Julian Love. The Seahawks are also expected to evaluate backup safeties AJ Finley and Maxen Hook in this context.

Bringing in a player like Thomas, who has starting experience, positions the Seahawks favorably as they look ahead to the NFL Draft in April. This strategic move could alleviate the pressure to select a safety early in the draft.
