While it is improbable that the Steelers will utilize all 12 picks, some of their assets are likely to be traded for future considerations or to move up in the 2026 Draft. As the Steelers prepare to host the draft, the entire city eagerly awaits a decision from Aaron Rodgers regarding his future.
Historically, it has been believed that the Steelers were not in a position to secure their next franchise quarterback in this draft. The top quarterback prospect is widely regarded as Fernando Mendoza from Indiana, who is expected to be selected first overall by the Las Vegas Raiders. The other notable quarterback in first-round discussions is Ty Simpson from Alabama. Although he started strong in the 2025 season, he did not finish on a high note.
On a recent ESPN segment, former NFL quarterback Dan Orlovsky made a bold statement, asserting that Simpson is the best quarterback prospect available. Former NFL general manager Mike Tannenbaum echoed this sentiment in a series of posts on social media, stating, “In talking to clubs, this opinion is shared by other teams as well.” He emphasized that the gap between Mendoza and Simpson is narrower than that between the second and third quarterbacks, indicating a significant difference in evaluation.
Many fans in Pittsburgh appear to have dismissed Simpson, preferring to wait for the 2027 NFL Draft, which is expected to feature a wealth of quarterback talent. However, if the Steelers identify a player who could significantly improve their quarterback situation and represent the future, they will not hesitate to make the selection. The organization is unlikely to wait until 2027, as numerous factors could change by then.
The current stance of the Steelers on this matter remains unclear, particularly regarding whether they consider Simpson a better prospect than Mendoza. Nonetheless, it is reasonable to assume that discussions are taking place within the team”s front office, as every team in need of a quarterback is likely reviewing Simpson”s potential.
As the debate continues, it is clear that opinions are divided, with many former players and analysts supporting Orlovsky”s viewpoint. This growing belief in Simpson”s ability at the NFL level suggests that his selection in the first round should not surprise anyone.
If Rodgers chooses to return to Pittsburgh, the need for a quarterback in the 2026 NFL Draft may diminish. However, should he decide to retire, the likelihood of the Steelers selecting a quarterback increases significantly. With Mendoza expected to be off the board early, the Steelers will not pick until the 21st overall selection. Teams such as the Cleveland Browns and the New York Jets could potentially draft Simpson before Pittsburgh has the opportunity.
