The Toronto Argonauts have made a significant move by re-signing standout return specialist Janarion Grant, ensuring a vital component of their roster for the upcoming season. Grant, who played in 15 games for the Argonauts last season, showcased his skills by averaging 22.9 yards per kick return and 12.8 yards per punt return.
At 32 years old, Grant is a product of Rutgers and previously spent the first four years of his Canadian Football League (CFL) career with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. During his time in Winnipeg, he was part of two Grey Cup-winning teams in 2019 and 2021. He joined Toronto in May 2024 and quickly contributed to another championship victory that same year.
In 2024, Grant earned the title of the CFL”s most outstanding special teams player and was named an all-star in both 2022 and 2024. Over the course of 72 regular-season games, he has recorded 13 return touchdowns, averaging 13.3 yards per punt return and 23.8 yards per kick return. His playoff performance includes three return touchdowns, highlighted by a record-setting 102-yard punt return touchdown, the longest in Grey Cup history, achieved during the 2022 final.
In addition to Grant”s re-signing, the Argonauts bolstered their special teams unit by signing American kicker Matt Ammendola. The 29-year-old from Philadelphia has experience with multiple NFL teams, including the Carolina Panthers, New York Jets, Houston Texans, Kansas City Chiefs, Arizona Cardinals, and Green Bay Packers, where he recorded a field goal conversion rate of 24 out of 35 attempts over 20 NFL games.
In other CFL news, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers have signed American defensive lineman Jake Ceresna to a two-year deal after acquiring his rights from the Edmonton Elks. Ceresna, 31, had a challenging 2025 season with injuries, finishing with 16 defensive tackles, one sack, and one interception in 11 games. Over his CFL career, he has tallied 46 sacks, including a career-high 12 in 2023.
The Ottawa Redblacks have also made roster moves, re-signing global defensive lineman Blessman Ta”ala, who contributed 16 tackles and four sacks over 17 games last season. Meanwhile, the Edmonton Elks extended the contract of national fullback Jacob Plamondon for another year.
